What is RSS?

Why RSS?
Mainly, because of the sad state of email. Email is a "push" technology - sending someone an email without them asking for it. Spammers use this to their advantage and have clogged email systems to the point of collapse. Many things are working against the free flow of information through email, not the least of which is the overabundance of junk email and the measures that ISP's (Internet Service Providers) and individuals are taking to reduce it. This means that when you send someone an email the best case scenario is that it gets buried in with the junk emails, and worst case - it never makes it to the recipient at all.
RSS is a "pull" technology, hence the term "subscription". Individuals who subscribe to your feeds essentially give you permission to send them information whenever you have something new on your site. That could be a new press release or news story, race results, a change in the point standings, changes in your schedule, upcoming events, a video of a victory lane interview - almost anything!
